First there was only human power as in a “two-man bobsled team.” This was superseded by animal power as in a “one-horse sleigh.” When a steam engine was invented to power a pump lifting water out of English coal mines, Scottish engineer James Watt [1736-1819] had to figure out a way of explaining to mine owners how its power related to that of the horses that it would replace.
