Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for soldiers who have died in the nation’s military service. Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” was first observed May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on graves at Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday to be observed the last Monday each May.
