Don Perry Stickrod departed this life on Friday, June 27, 2008, in Shawnee, at the age of 78.
He was born on September 23, 1929 in Quincy, Ill., to    Warren W. Stickrod and Eunice Echo Schultz.
He had lived in Shawnee for 52 years.  In 1951, he graduated from Kansas University, where he was a member of the varsity basketball and golf teams.  He was also a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
After college, Don served in the U.S. Air Force.  He earned  Outstanding Cadet out of 150 Cadets  in the Air Force and went on to become 1st Lieutenant pilot, training in T-36 jet planes.  He was honorably discharged at the end of the Korean War.
On September 19, 1953, Don married the love of his life, Edith Ruth Searcy of Dearborn, Mo., exchanging vows in Kansas City, Mo. The couple came to Shawnee in 1955 to help build Shawnee Steel Co.  Don and Edie were part of a strong core group that was instrumental in establishing the Republican Party in Pottawatomie County and Central Oklahoma.  Don served as Chairman of the Republican Party and also as one of eight Oklahoma delegates to the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami, Fla.
Don earned the rank of Eagle Scout and is the first of three generations to earn this high honor, setting the bar for his son and grandson earning this rank, a second grandson to earn his Eagle this fall, and three other grandsons coming up the ranks.
Don has always had an avid love for golf.  As a young man he missed qualifying as an amateur in the U.S. Open by one stroke. As much as he loved golf, Don said the best thing he ever did was take his family to the lake.  The Stickrod family has enjoyed many years of boating at Lake Eufaula. The family can recount many adventures on the lake, braving stormy seas to starry campfire nights.
Don is survived by his wife, Edie; his sister, Dottie Hatch Kern; his children, Warren W. Stickrod II and wife Lavonne, of Edmond, Anne L. Buckmaster and husband Greg of League City, Texas, and Janet A. Bowyer and husband Kit, of Heath, Texas.  Grandchildren include: Zack Stickrod, Fonda Coleman, Kyle (USMC), Mitchell, and Travis Buckmaster, and Adrienne, Chris and Nick Bowyer.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Parlor, 201 E. 45th Street, Shawnee. Phone: 273-4700.
