It took about a year for the walls to be erected of the dream home of Heather Burris and her two daughters, Autumn and Toynelle. Burris didn’t do it alone, she was helped by Habitat for Humanity of Shawnee.
Burris is the 10th recipient of a Habitat home, and Habitat for Humanity of Shawnee volunteers held a house dedication Saturday. The dedication opened in Habitat tradition with prayers and blessing of the home.
Burris and her daughters received a special surprise from her family. Her mother, sister, uncle and nephew drove from Amarillo, Texas, to be part of the dedication.
“I’m very excited to move in to our new home,” Burris said. “I look forward to continuing (to help) on the next house.”
The Habitat for Humanity organization provided Burris with three presentations — a family Bible, tool box with tools and three quilts.
“This is our way of wishing you well as you move in to your house,” said Tim Youmans.
“We don’t think homes are homes without quilts,” said one of the quilters of Spinning Spools Quilt Guild.
During construction, Burris and her two daughters worked more than 350 hours to build their home.
“Heather has been a great help at building her own house,” volunteer Joe Hall said.
“You (Habitat volunteers) made me stronger,” Burris said. “You don’t know how you contributed to my life.”
Local businesses that contributed to the building of Burris’ house are Mike Raider, construction supervisor; Buford White, building materials; Kizziah Heating and Air, central heat and air; Greg Rogers, electrical wiring; and many others.
Across the United States, Habitat for Humanity has provided more than 51,000 homes. More than 150,000 have been built worldwide.
The organization was founded in Americus, Ga., by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976.
