Shawnee residents chose one new city commissioner in Tuesday’s election, but the decision on another commission seat will come in November.

James Harrod is the new Ward 3 city commissioner with 1,930 votes, or 54.57 percent. He defeated the incumbent, Marva O’Neal, who received 1,607 votes, or 45.43 percent. The results are unofficial until they are certified on Friday.

Ward 2 commissioner candidates Jerry Chastain and Frank Sims will face each other in a run-off election in November after Tuesday’s race ended in a difference of 10 votes between the two. Chastain received 1,540 votes, or 43.58 percent, and Sims received 1,530 votes, or 43.29 percent. Candidate George L. Davis received 464 votes, or 13.13 percent. A run-off election is required because none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote. A run-off is between the top two candidates.

Harrod said he is glad the negative campaigning is finished, and he wishes the best for O’Neal in the future. He said he believes he can provide new leadership on the city commission. He also said he is grateful for people’s support and votes.
“I feel I can do the job and get Shawnee moving in the right direction,” Harrod said.
O’Neal said: “The people have spoken. I hope Mr. Harrod makes a good commissioner.”
Chastain said he is amazed the race was as close as it was, and he looks forward to preparing for the run-off in November.
“Thanks for all my supporters, and we need to get out and get more votes,” he said.
Sims said he is looking forward to continuing his campaign to November. He said he was surprised at Tuesday’s outcome.
“It (election results) clearly shows this city is divided,” Sims said. “I hope to expand on the message of uniting Shawnee and leading everyone in the same direction.”
Ward 2 run-off election will be Nov. 4, and Harrod will take office in November.
