Private Nicole D. Wood graduated from Marine Corps basic training June 20, at Parris Island, S.C. During the 13-week training, she received instruction on military history, customs and courtesies; leadership and core values, basic first aid, basic field and combat skills, including the Marine Corps martial arts program for hand-to-hand combat and the firing range.
She is the daughter of Corene Chakenatho of Shawnee. Her grandparents are Norma Scott of Shawnee and Juan and Sally Matanane of McLoud. She is the older sister of Kaylon.
Wood is a 2006 graduate of Shawnee High School, and she is a member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma.
Wood received the National Defense Service Medal for serving during wartime, as well as a sharpshooter badge.
She reported to Camp Geiger, N.C., for more infantry training.
