Shawnee resident Charles “Otis” Whittington, 87, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008.
He was born Oct. 12, 1920, to Charles Henry and Dovie Mae (Thetford) Whittington in Jimtown, Okla.
Otis was a loving husband and father, a devoted Christian and left a legacy of love to all who knew him.
He married June Keith on Sept. 22, 1967, and moved to Shawnee in 1969.
Otis was retired owner of Otis Produce and Shawnee Fruit Company in Shawnee. He was a longtime member of the Hilltop Baptist Church where he taught Adult II Sunday School and Training Union Classes, served as Sunday school and Training Union Director, served on several Committees and enjoyed singing in a gospel quartet throughout the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Joe, Leroy, Robert, and Herman Whittington; sister, Odie Mae Harper; daughter, Rheta Toumbs; and grandson, Jason Berkenbile.
Survivors include his wife June of the home and their son, Bryan Whittington of Shawnee. Other surviving children and their mother Esther Whittington of Shawnee include Harold and Shirley Whittington, Joyce and Jasper Painter, Janice Berkenbile of Oklahoma City, Rhonda and Charles Whittington Jr., of Shawnee; also a special son-in-law, Richard Toumbs of Newcastle, Okla.
Otis left 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Sadie McPherson of Durant, Okla., Ruby and husband Pete Jordan, Vivian Mason of Oklahoma City and one brother, Charles H. and wife Betty Whittington of Thackerville, Okla. Extended family, June’s sister, Doyleen Smith, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Special thanks for their loving care and kindness to, Dr. Scott Stewart and Dr. Lara Mashek (granddaughter), Fourth Floor nurses and staff of Shawnee Unity Hospital, and Loving Care Hospice.
The family will receive visitors at Hilltop Baptist Church, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at 44500 MacArthur, Shawnee.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hilltop Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Nickerson and Bro. David Earl Whittington officiating. Burial will be Tecumseh Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Otis Whittington Memorial Fund at First United Bank, Shawnee.
