Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, or GEAR UP, has announced Jane Bonser of Seminole as GEAR UP Volunteer of the Year. Bonser received the award for her volunteer work tutoring New Lima eighth-and ninth-graders in math throughout the 2008-09 school year.
Bonser’s efforts helped the students, the New Lima School District and the GEAR UP Program.
She and her husband, Dr. Curt Bonser, who is retired from Indian Health Services, moved to Seminole from Kansas six years ago.
Bonser taught high school math for 22 years in Kansas and Pennsylvania before retiring. She is a choir member in the First United Methodist Church, a member of the American Association of University Women and a driver safety instructor for the American Association of Retired Persons.
GEAR UP is a federally funded grant partnered with Seminole State College. The grant provides services for 580 eighth- and ninth-graders in the Bowlegs, Butner, Justice, New Lima, Paden, Sasakwa, Seminole, Strother and Varnum school districts. Services included tutoring, field trips, school supplies and educators’ professional development.
There is also a community volunteer component to GEAR UP. Career speakers, workshop assistance and summer camp are some of the areas needing volunteers. Any individual, community organization, church or business who would like to become involved in GEAR UP as a volunteer or to provide in kind is encouraged to contact the GEAR UP office at 382-9719.
