The fear of the unknown and a slow economy were pushed aside when three local residents, tired of working for other people, decided to open a custom car shop on Kickapoo Street in Shawnee.
One Stop Custom Shop, just south of the Kickapoo Spur, is really no more a trio of guys – Jeramie Lovette, Michael Petty and Pekka Ikonen, a native of Sweden —— who met while working together at a nearby business painting boats. The three men didn’t like the way they – or customers – were being treated by the business’ owner, so the three of them pooled their resources and ventured out into the unknown.
“We felt like we could have a better business, that we could treat our customers better,” Ikonen said. “And we’re going to charge a fair price, especially in today’s world.”
The shop offers custom paint and body work, tune ups, performance work on engines and car, motorcycle and boat detailing. Ikonen said the store may add upholstery work to the list but hasn’t decided on that yet.
Painting, though, seems to be the store’s speciality and Petty said a pretty solid paint job can be had for around $3,000, give or take.
Ikonen, who said Friday that he’s been painting since the mid-1980s, is also considering in-house financing to make the store’s services more attainable for people who may be struggling in the current economy but still need work done.
“We know people are hurting for money these days but they still need stuff done,” he said. “We will work with people on that.”
For now, the store is just starting out. Some paint jobs are slated for the near future but detailing seems to be a way the store can scrape by until things take off – so long as the weather cooperates.
“The first week, last week, was a little hard,” Petty said. “With the weather this week, things have been pretty good.”
One Stop Custom Shop is located at 1125 N. Kickapoo Street in Shawnee. For further information, contact the shop at 878-0088.
