Law enforcement officers are searching for a suspect who fled a pickup on foot after leading authorities on a chase through two counties late Monday, where that vehicle allegedly clipped a Meeker officer trying to deploy stop sticks.
Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty reported the pursuit began in Pottawatomie County as deputies tried to stop a pickup towing a stolen box trailer.
The pursuit entered Lincoln County on 3440 Road and continued north, he said.
About one mile south of SH 62, officers set up road blocks, but the vehicle ran through them, he said. A bit further north, Dougherty said Meeker Police Officer Matt Willis was attempting to deploy some stop sticks when the driver allegedly swerved toward him, with the pickup clipping the officer’s leg.
The officer was reported to be fine, the sheriff said, but the pursuit came to an end more than a mile later where the roadway ends, with the reported driver fleeing the vehicle on foot, Dougherty said.
A passenger in the vehicle stayed inside and was taken into custody by Pottawatomie County deputies, Dougherty said. He said the stolen vehicle was recovered, while a manhunt commenced for the driver.
Dougherty said as part of the investigation, they have identified the driver as a Meeker man. Two tracking dogs were used late Monday and into the overnight hours. The dogs tracked the suspect to the northeast and lost the scent, he said.
About 2:45 a.m., a Ford pickup with attached flat-bed trailer was reported stolen in the general area, Dougherty said. Pottawatomie County deputies located and began a pursuit of that stolen vehicle within 15 minutes of the report, but lost sighting, Dougherty said.
That stolen vehicle was recovered in the Earlsboro area Tuesday.
Dougherty said searches for the suspect, sought as part of the investigation into this chase, were ongoing Tuesday.
Formal charges have not been filed.
