Unranked Dale fought off a fourth-quarter challenge from 15th-ranked Thomas-Fay-Custer Thursday night to record a 53-50 Class 2A regional winners bracket victory.
Down 42-29 entering the final period, Thomas-Fay-Custer crept within one point with 1:34 remaining before Dale ultimately prevailed.
Tanner Goodwin of Dale (15-10) accumulated three 3-point field goals en route to a game-high 19 points. David Kauley of Dale added two treys.
Dale, assured of advancing to next week’s area tournament, will oppose third-ranked Watonga at 8 p.m. Saturday night for the regional crown.
By way of 10 shots from 3-point range, with half of those from Katherine Weatherby, the Dale girls smothered Hinton 71-26 in a losers bracket game.
Weatherby, a 5-10 senior, sank five shots from long range en route to a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Lexes Satterwhite canned four treys for her 12 points.
“We shot it pretty good, especially from outside,” said Dale coach Josh Forsythe. “We’ve just got to keep the momentum going like it’s going now.”
The Lady Pirates (21-5) are the defending Class 2A state champions.
Breck Clark, a 5-9 sophomore, scored 17 of Dale’s points.
Dale will face Thursday’s Cashion-Dewar loser at 6:30 p.m. today at Jones in a losers bracket contest.
