It was Black Friday for Tri-County entrants in the semifinal sessions of the state wrestling tournament at State Fair Arena.
Six Tri-County hopefuls advanced to the semifinals — in three classes — and all six lost.
Shawnee, competing in Class 5A, had two semifinalists in Yahola Jones at 119 pounds and Daylan Stuteville at 140 pounds.
Jones, a first-round pinner of Jacob Lusch of Carl Albert, was upended 5-0 in the semifinals by Tulsa East Central’s Mark Carter. Carter posted takedowns in the first and third periods against the Shawnee senior.
Stuteville, a 5-2 first-round winner over Carl Albert’s Blake Lam, fell 10-2 in the semifinals to Guthrie’s Bryan Dutton.
“We just never really got untracked in either match,” Shawnee head coach Larry James said.
Jones and Stuteville need one win today, beginning with the 10:30 a.m. session, to earn a medal. A win in the 10:30 session would put them in a third-place match.
“We had a good morning session but we had a bad afternoon session,” James said. “Now, we have to go win a match to place.”
Shawnee’s other two qualifiers, sophomore Michael Smith (112) and junior Corey Todd (135), went 0-2 Friday and finished their seasons.
McLoud, a Class 4A representative, had two semifinalists in juniors Josh Parker (145) and Michael Tiffin (160). Parker earned his semifinal berth with a 4-3 win over Jay’s Izack Wilson while Tiffin pinned Forrest Woolman of Locust Grove.
In the semifinals, Parker fell 5-2 to Blackwell’s Cole Courtney while Tiffin was a 3-2 loser to Blackwell’s Ky Cassady.
Tecumseh’s sole entrant, Ryland Hausam (152), prevailed 8-5 in his first match against Vinita’s Michael Sunday, but was a 10-0 loser to Austin Elam of Tuttle in the semis.
Bethel’s Curtis Smith, after posting a 9-0 major decision of Justus Edwards of Perkins-Tryon, was pinned by Davey Dolan of Berryhill in a Class 3A semifinal encounter.
Also headed for consolation action today are Brent McCormick (112) and Josh Mouser (119) of McLoud after going 1-1 on the day.
Chandler entrants Austin Waters (125) and Blake Barrier (140) also avoided elimination after recording 1-1 marks.
