Central Oklahoma Economic Development District (COEDD) Area Agency on Aging is offering two upcoming Volunteer Ombudsman training sessions in Pottawatomie and Hughes counties. Each session takes place over two days and is open to all interested individuals. The training will cover the role and responsibilities of Ombudsman Volunteers, the aging process, residents’ rights, communication skills building, understanding the role of government in the nursing home industry, and, mediation, negotiation and complaint resolution.
The first session will be held at the COEDD offices, 400 N. Bell Street, Shawnee, on Thursday and Friday, March 17 and 18. The second training session for Ombudsman volunteers will be in Hughes County on two consecutive Fridays, April 8 and 15, at the Holdenville Senior Community Center, located at 124 N. Creek Street, Holdenville. The trainings run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Long-Term Care Ombudsmen help ensure senior residents receive quality of life care in a dignified manner. Volunteer ombudsmen are vital to the long-term care Ombudsman Program due to their regular presence in facilities and their friendships with residents.
Ombudsman Volunteers require true compassion for elderly people and their needs, willingness to problem solve from beginning to resolution, and abilities to objectively observe and work with a diverse group of people on individual and non-judgmental bases. Ombudsman Volunteers must be willing to dedicate two hours per week for facility visits and attend monthly volunteer meetings.
The training is free and open to all interested individuals. All Ombudsman Volunteers are subject to criminal background checks.
All prospective Ombudsman Volunteers may call Patti Marshall, Ombudsman Supervisor, at COEDD Area Agency on Aging in Shawnee, OK, at 1-800-375-8255, ext. 127.
