Ten Tri-County basketball squads remain in the hunt for state tournament berths entering area tournament play this week.
Four of those squads — Shawnee’s girls (Class 5A), Bethel’s girls (Class 3A), Prague’s girls (Class 3A) and Tecumseh’s boys (Class 4A) — are in the winners bracket and need just one area tournament victory to move on to state.
Fourth-ranked Shawnee, under head coach Wendi Wells, will tangle with fellow Suburban Conference foe Carl Albert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Norman North High School. Should Shawnee (22-2) lose that game, it would have another chance to earn a state berth Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Norman North.
Bethel’s top-ranked Lady Wildcats can go to state with a win against Northeast Academy at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Ada. The Lady Wildcats of head coach Jerry Johnson are 22-2.
Prague, under coach Jay Depanion, will carry a 21-1 mark into its 6:30 p.m. matchup with Perkins-Tryon at McLoud. Second-ranked Prague is coming off a 40-28 regional championship decision of Sulphur Saturday night.
Tecumseh’s boys, under the direction of head coach Matt Thornton, can advance to the state tourney with a 6:30 p.m. Friday triumph over Roland at Muskogee’s Civic Center. Tecumseh, a 72-61 victor over Fort Gibson in a Saturday regional title game, is 22-1 on the season.
Six Tri-County squads remain alive in losers bracket play, including the Shawnee Wolves of coach Ron Arthur. Shawnee came within a hair of upsetting top-seeded and regional host McGuinness Saturday night, only to drop a 48-46 heartbreaker.
Shawnee must win two games, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday night at Yukon against Duncan — like the Wolves a regional runner-up — in an elimination game.
The Class 2A Dale girls and boys will both play Thursday at the Chisholm Trail Expo in Enid. The Pirates and the defending state champion Lady Pirates need three area tournament wins to advance.
Also scheduled to play Thursday in the losers bracket are Prague’s boys at McLoud and the Chandler boys and girls at Ada. Those squads also need to register three victories to keep their campaigns churning.
