  • Sixteen Shawnee-area residents recently were awarded academic scholarships by Oklahoma Baptist University for the 2011-12 academic year.

  • Sixteen Shawnee-area residents recently were awarded academic scholarships by Oklahoma Baptist University for the 2011-12 academic year.
    Turner Bass, Sarah Cullison and Kelsey Gressett received Founders’ Academic Scholarships. Presented in recognition of academic achievement, the Founders’ Academic Scholarship is an annual $9,000 scholarship which can be renewed for three additional years, making the honor worth a potential of $36,000.
    Bass is a senior at Harrah High School. He serves as president of National Honor Society, president of Mu Alpha Theta, and vice president of student council. He also is a member of Chemistry Club. He is also involved in the First Baptist Church of Harrah Youth Worship Band and is an insturmentalist for the Sunday Worship Team. His interests include international missions, music composition and songwriting. He currently plans to pursue a college degree in interdisciplinary Christian studies, foreign language or pre-medicine. Bass is the son of Mark and Shelley Wear. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Harrah.
    Cullison is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is president of National Honor Society and co-president of Shawnee Youth Coalition. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in biology. Cullison is the daughter of Greg and Ann Cullison. She is a member of University Baptist Church.
    Gressett is a senior at McLoud High School. She is involved with Fellowship of Believers, student council, National Honor Society and Key Club. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing. She is also involved with the Food Bank. Gressett is the daughter of Greg and Sonia Gressett. She is a member of New Life Baptist Church.
    Karina Chavez, Kaylee Haynes, Benjamin Whitmore and Thomas Whitmore received Trustees’ Academic Scholarships. Presented in recognition of academic achievement, the Trustees’ Academic Scholarship is an annual $7,000 scholarship which can be renewed for three additional years, making the honor worth a potential of $28,000.
    Chavez is a senior at Macomb High School. She is involved with softball, basketball, cheer and National Honor Society. She is also involved in Macomb Summer Ball Association. Chavez is ranked first academically in her senior class. She earned All-State honorable mention in fast-pitch softball in the 2010 season. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in medicine. Chavez is the daughter of Jose and Debbie Chavez. She is a member of St. Benedicts.
    Kaylee Haynes is a senior at Harrah High School. She is involved with National Honor Society, Art Club, Fish Club and serves as a class officer. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing. Haynes is the granddaughter of Roy and Joyce Boatwright. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Harrah.
    Benjamin Whitmore is a senior at Shawnee High School. He is involved with band, theater and National Honor Society. He is also involved in Shawnee Youth Coalition. He currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing. Whitmore is the son of Keith and Laura Whitmore. He is a member of University Baptist Church.
    Page 2 of 3 - Thomas Whitmore is a senior at Shawnee High School. He is involved with band, tennis and National Honor Society. He is also involved in Shawnee Youth Coalition. He currently plans to pursue a college degree in music. Whitmore is the son of Keith and Laura Whitmore. He is a member of University Baptist Church.
    Rebekah deCosier, Rachael Gregory, Alyson Heath, Sarita Jenkins, Bethany McWilliams, Keaton Nye, Ashley Roberts and Dylan Smith received President’s Academic Scholarships. Presented in recognition of academic achievement, the President’s Academic Scholarship is an annual $6,000 scholarship which can be renewed for three additional years, making the honor worth a potential of $24,000.
    DeCosier is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is involved with National Honor Society and band. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in biology. DeCosier is the daughter of John and Barbara deCosier. She is a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
    Gregory is a senior at Del City High School. She is involved with National Honor Society and golf. She serves as a student aide and has been a class officer for four years. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in cross-cultural ministries. Gregory is the daughter of Marsha Jones and Michael Gregory. She is a member of Howard Memorial Baptist Church.
    Heath is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is involved with Leadership Class and National Honor Society. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing/cross-cultural missions. She is also involved in Shawnee Rescue Mission, Meals on Wheels and Perspective Mission Classes. She works at a daycare part-time after school and participates in discipleship classes at church. She likes to help people in need, such as homeless people. Heath is the daughter of Don and Barbara Carter. She is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
    Jenkins is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is involved with National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student council and is a Safe School Board representative. She is also involved in Good Shepherd Chapel, Mission Shawnee and is an Oklahoma Army National Guard Student Panel member. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing with a cross-cultural minor. Jenkins is the daughter of Sara Jenkins. She is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
    McWilliams is a senior at Dale High School. She is involved with band, Drama Club, yearbook and National Honor Society. She is also involved in Living In Light: Community Service group. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing. McWilliams is the daughter of John and Sherry McWilliams. She is a member of Hazel Dell Baptist Church.
    Nye is a senior at Shawnee High School. He is involved with Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Leadership Class and National Honor Society. He currently plans to pursue a college degree in business with a minor in religion. Nye is the son of Tim and Carlise Nye. He is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
    Page 3 of 3 - Roberts is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, choir, National Honor Society and musical. She is also involved in Shawnee Rescue Mission. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in applied ministry. Roberts is the daughter of Larry and Candace Roberts. She is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
    Smith is a senior at Tecumseh High School. He is involved with student council, Beta Club, varsity golf and Leadership Class. He currently plans to pursue a college degree in biochemistry. Smith is the son of Kody and Mystie Smith. He is a member of First Assembly of God in Tecumseh.
    Caitlin Steer received the Dean’s Transfer Academic Scholarship. Presented in recognition of academic achievement, the scholarship is an annual $3,500 award.
    Steer is a senior at Shawnee High School. She is involved with Tri Hi Y. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in early childhood education. Steer is the daughter of Pat and Mary Moats. She is a member of University Baptist Church.
