City of Shawnee officials will be mixing business with pleasure this weekend as commissioners, the mayor, and the city manager make a retreat up to Stillwater for special meetings Sunday night and Monday morning.

The Sunday evening special meeting will feature dinner and visiting. The meeting Monday morning is to discuss capital improvement projects previously recommended by a subcommittee comprised of three commissioners and ways the city can fund them, City Manager Brian McDougal said.

No formal action will be taken during the meetings, according to the agenda.

“I want them to work together on these projects” City Manager Brian McDougal said.

He has requested the commissioners take a retreat ever year since coming to work for the city. The commissioners took one in 2009 but were unable to take one in 2010 because of economic conditions, McDougal said.

“This year the commissioners need to do a retreat and they need to talk about these projects. There’s a lot going on,” McDougal said.

Reasoning for the trip was two-part: to encourage a group dynamic that will accommodate discussions and ideas to help resolve some of the issues the commissioners have had regarding the $50 million capital improvement projects and ways to fund them, he said.

“It’s to talk about these projects and figure out what they want to do with them,” McDougal said.

The reason for having the meetings in Stillwater instead of areas around Shawnee were not clear. Mayor Linda Peterson was not available for comment but McDougal proposed his own ideas for the change of venue.

“I think the sentiment is that people will put down their cell phones and they won’t be dropping their kids off and picking them up for school and stuff like that,” McDougal said. “It will give them a chance to concentrate more on business.”

The meetings will take place at the Atherton Hotel on the OSU campus, H-103 Student Union Joullian Room in Stillwater at 5 p.m. Sunday and on Monday will take place at the hotel at 9 a.m.
