The Rev. Amy Perkins will be officially installed as pastor of United Presbyterian Church, Shawnee, at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, with a reception to follow.   


The Rev. Amy Perkins will be officially installed as pastor of United Presbyterian Church, Shawnee, at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, with a reception to follow.    

The Installation Commission includes Rev. Matt Perkins, her husband, who will give the charge to the congregation. He is a pastor in the United Church of Christ. Rev. Ellen Brantley will then give the charge to the pastor and present her with a special stole made for the occasion. Brantley is the pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Mo., and a member of Heartland Presbytery. Rev.

James Hawley will serve as  guest preacher. He is lead pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Salina, Kan., a member of Northern Kansas Presbytery.  

Representing the Indian Nations Presbytery, with which the Shawnee church is a affiliated, will be Rev. Matt Meinke, Rev. Mark Henslee, Rev. Tracy Evans, Elder Harry Wright, Moderator of Indian Nations Presbytery, Elder Mary Sanders and Elder Mary Oppegard.

Special guests will include members of the Achena Presbyterian Church, located in Maud, who will provide music for the service.  

With a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., and an undergraduate degree in Communications and English from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., Rev. Perkins most recently served as a supply pastor based in Decorah, Iowa. She also served as a presbytery coordinator and ethics teacher at the local community college. She has previously held pastorates in Rockville, Md., and Albany, N. Y.

She was raised in Nashville. She and her husband have two children, Phoebe and Zachary and are currently residing in Shawnee.
Working with the Session, Perkins plans to continue and strengthen such programs as the Community Meal every fourth Sunday, the tutoring program at Horace Mann School, and the Front Porch Ministry, which serves college students. She also plans to continue the structured liturgy of worship, featuring a mix of traditional and more contemporary music. She and Elder Mary Sanders will jointly administer the new website: www.upcshawnee.com.

The church is located at 330 N. Beard in Shawnee. All members of the community will be welcome at this special service.
