We live outside of Maud in Pottawatomie County and have needed assistance from the Maud volunteer fire department several times. Every time these volunteers came quickly and jumped in and handled the situation. My guess is that the other volunteer departments around Pottawatomie County are also a real blessing for their communities. The last thing we need is for these important service providers to get their funding cut. We’re grateful that they have better equipment than they used to, and if continued funding means they can afford additional training or specialized gear then that’s better for everyone.
In talking to people about this election, I have heard some people say they will only vote by party regardless of what a candidate stands for or what their ideas are for the county. Everything about our county, from our roads and bridges to our volunteer fire departments and the health of Shawnee’s economy, is far too important to simply vote for a candidate based on their party affiliation. The News-Star’s editorial in the Feb. 9 paper is something everyone who plans on voting should read.
    Sarah Rodefeld,
    Maud
