  • Mary Juanita Strickland Combs was born Nov. 14, 1926, to Dan and Miley Strickland in Shawnee and departed this life May 9, 2012, from multiple myleoma.
    She grew up in Shawnee and in 1932 started first grade in the new Lee School.
    On June 6, 1946, she married Glendon Combs in Norman. To them was born one son, Danny Combs, on Feb. 22, 1947.
    In her 40 years as bookkeeper at the Shawnee News-Star she was known as the birthday cake lady, as she made them cakes on their birthdays.
    She and Glendon would drive miles to see a flower garden and pick up rocks for their rock gardens. Her mother told them if they were ever arrested for anything, it would be for taking flowers and rocks.
    She attended the Shawnee Senior Center where she made many beautiful quilts. She loved growing blue ribbon roses, doing needlepoint, counted cross stitch, gardening, baking cakes and cookies, and her little dog Shotsie.
    She was a member of the Central Church of Christ.  
    Following her retirement, she and Glendon traveled to many countries and all 50 states except North Dakota.
    She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Danny.
    She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Glendon; one brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Sue Strickland of Midwest City; three nephews, five nieces, several great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-great-nephew.
    Services will be 2 p.m., Monday, May 14, in the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with Dwyane Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
