  • Shawnee's Wolves will join other Tri-County football squads Tuesday, Aug. 7, for the first practice sessions of the 2012 season.
In anticipation, Shawnee will conduct a parents meeting - for families of footballers from the ninth grade through the 12th grade - Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletic Center.
Practice on Aug. 7 will begin at 8 a.m.
Before the big boys hog the stage, the smaller gridders will get their stay in the spotlight. The 12th annual Shawnee Little Wolves camp - for youngsters from the fourth grade through the eighth grade - will be held Thursday and Friday.
Shawnee head coach Billy Brown said interested participants can check in at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The camp runs until noon both days at Jim Thorpe Stadium.
The cost is $30 per camper and each entrant will receive a free T-shirt.
Although most of the Shawnee High School footballers have already checked out their equipment, Brown said anyone needing help in that area can do so Wednesday between 8 a.m. and noon.
Brown said approximately 100 prospects ‹ ninth grade through 12th grade - have already checked out equipment.
Seventh and eighth grade players won't check out equipment until Wednesday, Aug. 8, the first day of school.
Shawnee's annual football media day will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. The Wolves will take part in two preseason scrimmages - Thursday, Aug. 16, at Tecumseh and Friday, Aug. 24, at Norman. Eight schools will compete in the Norman High School format, including three squads - Deer Creek, McAlester and Noble - who will play Shawnee in the regular season.
"It's kind of unusual to be involved in any type of scrimmage with a regular season opponent but all four of us have been in this Norman scrimmage the last couple of years," Brown said.
Shawnee, a Class 6A entrant the previous two years, is returning to the 5A ranks this season. McAlester and Noble will be district foes.
Other teams in the Norman scrimmage will be Choctaw, Norman, Stillwater and a team from Arkansas.
Brown said the coaching staff was impressed with the summer turnout for the 7-on-7 competition and the weightlifting.
"Basically, everyone was here that we needed for the season," Brown said. Shawnee will launch the 2012 season Friday, Aug. 31, by entertaining McGuinness at Jim Thorpe Stadium.
