Tax-free weekend begins midnight Friday.

Clothing items, which includes shoes, under $100 will not be taxed between Friday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 5. Items totaling more than $100 are not exempt from taxes, however multiple items under $100 that together total more than $100 will remain tax exempt.

While purchasers will not pay sales tax, the city of Shawnee will still receive sales tax dollars from the state, Finance Director Cindy Sementelli said.

She also encouraged buyers to stay in Shawnee to do their shopping.

“Everybody needs to shop Shawnee,” Sementelli said. “Let’s keep it local.”

Marta Land, Chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce, said this is a good opportunity for Shawnee.

“I think a lot of businesses will be very affected,” she said. “I’m excited for the retail businesses and I think this is great.”

There will be plenty of sales at Shawnee Mall, according to General Manager Scott Kingrey.

“We’re expecting a busy weekend,” he said. “We hope it will affect us very well.”

“The weekend traffic usually resembles a weekend during Christmas,” Kingrey added.
