  • A grade-school student was discovered in an alleged act of vandalism with an axe on the Shawnee Middle School campus Monday afternoon and was quickly apprehended. No students were in danger and no injuries were reported.
The incident prompted Dr. Marc Moore, superintendent for Shawnee Public Schools, to use the Blackboard Connect system in a recorded phone call to notify parents.
In that call, Moore informed parents that it was about 1 p.m. when a school employee drove to the Middle School Athletic Complex, an area about 100 yards behind the main building.
The employee, reported to be a custodian on a golf cart, noticed a student was vandalizing an Athletic Complex building with an axe, Moore’s call reported.
The employee immediately notified the school’s resource officer on site and police also responded. The student was taken into custody without incident.
Upon further investigation, Moore said it was determined that the apprehended student was not a student at Shawnee Middle School, and no students were at the Athletic Complex during the incident.
“The axe was never near the main school building,” Moore said, “We also believe no students were in danger.”
Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz said the student suspect, who he believed was either a fourth-or-fifth-grader, was released to the custody of his parents after juvenile service workers were notified and became involved in the case.
As far as damage, Moore said there was some work being done to power lines in that area.
