The Defense Department says three of four soldiers killed Sunday in an insider attack in Afghanistan were from Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The Pentagon said Wednesday their position was attacked with small arms fire. A NATO spokesman said earlier that Afghan police turned on soldiers during an attack at a checkpoint.
The dead were identified as 25-year-old Sgt. Sapuro B. Nena of Honolulu, 20-year-old Pfc. Genaro Bedoy of Amarillo, Texas, and 19-year-old Pfc. Jon R. Townsend of Claremore, Okla. The three were members of the 3rd Stryker Brigade from Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Also killed was 22-year-old Spc. Joshua N. Nelson, 22 of Greenville, N.C. who was assigned to the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Gordon, Ga.
