  • Shawnee is hosting the 40th annual Oklahoma Museums Association Conference. This is the first OMA conference in Shawnee.

“The Mabee-Gerrer Museum invited us,” Brenda Granger, executive director for OMA, said. “We were honored at the invitation,” Granger added.

Shawnee seemed like the perfect place to host this conference with the cultural heritage from the Citizen Pottawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center, the Santa Fe Depot Museum, and the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, Granger said.

The yearly conference discusses different topics each meeting. This year’s topics range from artifacts to fundraising.

“It’s a time when Oklahoma museums can come together as a profession,” Granger said.

Dan Provo, OMA board member, said often the reason people attend this conference is to learn about new things going on in other museums.

“Sometimes people, when they think of museums, don’t realize they are always changing,” Provo said.

Often the conferences include not only new topics, but also discussion about what museums are doing internally, he said.

“How can we work together effectively to share our resources,” Provo said. “We’re trying to efficient and inclusive and build bridges between museums.”

In addition, conferences like this often leave people excited to return to work, Provo said.

“One of the things I think meets like this do is re-energize people,” he added.

The conference will remain in town until Friday afternoon.
