Several items were discussed at this week’s Shawnee Planning Commission meeting, including the creation of a new Boomerang restaurant.
Ron Degraffenreid, owner of Boomerang Diners, is closing the Kickpoo Street location, just north of MacArthur Street, and opening another in the 400 block of MacArthur.
After the staff recommendation, the planning commission voted unanimously to approve the rezoning.
Another item on the agenda was the current O’Reilly’s Auto Parts location. This location requested a rezoning to expand the parking lot, in addition to adding a new location on Kickapoo Street, which was addressed at a previous meeting.
The planning commission voted unanimously to approve the rezoning for the Harrison Street location.
Also included on the agenda was a preliminary and final plat request for Belmont Park Addition at Acme and MacArthur Streets. This includes multi-family housing, which will feature 25 townhome-style units. The preliminary plat included three separate lots. The final plat requested was only for Lot 1.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the preliminary plat and the final plat for Lot 1.
The agenda also included a request for rezoning a property on North Harrison, in order for it to be used as a storage facility. Clayton Eads, the applicant, said he works at a storage facility and Shawnee needs more storage.
The next item was related. It was a plat for building the storage facility.
The commission voted 5-1 to approve, with Shawna Turner in the opposition. Turner said later she doesn’t believe Shawnee needs any more storage facilities, and after they are built they can’t be used as anything else. Storage facilities become “eyesores” for the community, Turner added.
In New Business, the commission also discussed a letter to be drafted from the Planning Commission about creating a bike lane on Bryan Street between Highland and MacArthur. The letter will be sent to the Traffic Commission and City Commission.
The approved rezonings and plats will be heard at the Monday, Oct. 15, City Commission meeting.
The Planning Commission will have a special called meeting to discuss rezoning 204 N. Louisa to allow for a homeless shelter. The meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Commission Chambers at Shawnee City Hall.
The next regularly scheduled Planning Commission meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Commission Chambers at Shawnee City Hall.
