Paige Hughes recorded a first-place time of 12:39, and the Shawnee Lady Wolves successfully defended their Suburban Conference Championship crown Tuesday with a team score of 26 points. Deer Creek was runner-up in the varsity girls’ standings at 50, while host Piedmont was third at 83. Behind Hughes in the individual standings was teammate Katelynn Downs in third at 12:54. Shawnee’s Daylan Storie was sixth at 13:05, and the Lady Wolves had three other runners place in the top 10 — Maddie Rutherford (13:07) at seventh; Lynsey West (13:14) at ninth; and Tate Mocabee (13:16) at 10th. There were six teams and 46 individuals in the girls’ race. “The girls dominated the field, and defended their conference title from 2011,” Shawnee head coach Mark Heard said. “Paige Hughes ran a fantastic race today. She is positioning herself as one of the top 5A girls, as she led the team to victory. “This was one of the best team performances in school history and I am real proud of the way the girls are coming together.” On the varsity boys’ side, Shawnee was fourth as a team with 98 points. Deer Creek was the champion at 15, and Guthrie was runner-up at 76. Piedmont placed third at 87. Leading Shawnee individually was Tyler Day with an eighth-place time of 17:45. Teammate Josh Kalies was 10th at 17:52. There were six teams and 46 runners in the varsity boys’ race. “The boys had a tough day and were not pleased with the result,” Heard said. “Tyler and Josh had good performances today, but the other guys struggled today.” Of the eight teams in the junior varsity girls’ race, Shawnee was tops with 24 points. Blair Johnson was the individual JV champion at 13:33, and Amber Vongsouvahn (14:26), Hannah Brooks (14:31) and Lauren Gates (14:36) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Shawnee’s next outing is the regional championships, which will begin at noon Saturday, Oct. 20, at Piedmont. Note: Report compiled by Jason Smith.
