  • Three local companies were awarded Downtown Façade Grants.

The grants are $2,500 each, with six grants available. The grants are being funded by the City of Shawnee, the Shawnee Economic Development Foundation and the Shawnee Industrial Authority.

The grants are intended to supplement projects to preserve the historic look of downtown. Companies will be reimbursed the $2,500 after the projects are completed.

Only three applications were submitted to the Planning Department, Justin Erickson, planning director, said.

Erickson suspects because this is a new grant that many business owners are planning to “wait and see,” he said.

Another application process will take place in January, and he suspects the next round will be more competitive, Erickson said.

One grant was awarded to Armstrong Trust, which owns several buildings, including Shawnee Travel. The buildings were built in 1895, and are the second oldest buildings in Shawnee. The Armstrong family has owned the buildings since the 1930s, according to their application.

The project will bring back the current façade and improve the original windows.

“Shawnee is trying to improve downtown and I think it looks wonderful,” trustee Harriet Armstrong said. “We’re really looking forward to it.”

“I think it’s going to be just great,” Armstrong added.

Another grant was awarded to Neal’s Home Furnishings. The building was built in 1907 and has been owned by the Neal family for nearly 35 years.

This project will improve the building windows and improve signage.

The final grant was awarded to Sips Downtown Kafe. The building was built in 1889 and has been owned by Brad Carter for three years, according to his application.

This project will restore the windows, according to the application.
