  • The Shawnee Fire Department honored members of the department during ceremonial promotion ceremonies in Station No. 1 at Shawnee City Hall.
Two new battalion chiefs were honored for promotions in rank, along with four captains. Three probationary firefighters who have completed their first year on the job also were recognized.
The department, which has three battalion chiefs, needed to fill two positions following the retirement of one longtime battalion chief and another, David Short, being named as the department's new fire chief.
Jack Miller and Andy Starkey were recognized as the new battalion chiefs, with each receiving the trademark white battalion chief's helmet and their news badges and collar brass.
Four firefighters also were honored for achieving the rank of captain. Those receiving their new red captain helmets and collar brass were Darrin Fowler, Tommy Larman, Todd Luster and Denis Taron.
And three rookie firefighters who successfully completed their probationary year also received their badges and collar brass — Chris Bertram, Mark McLain and Brett Laxson.
The group recited an oath of office administered by Mayor Wes Mainord.
Firefighter Jim "Ogie" Ogle also was recognized for his 16 years of service to the department's fire clowns prevention program. Each year, firefighters dress as clowns and present singing and dancing skits in area elementary schools.
