  • St. Gregory’s University found its outside shooting stroke in a dominant 83-36 win over Northwood (Texas) University Monday night at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse. The Lady Cavaliers, who came into the game having made only 19-of-97 from beyond the arc for the season, hit 13 3-pointers in snapping a two-game losing streak. Just as impressive was the SGU defense, which allowed the visiting Lady Knights only 18 percent shooting from the field and forced 30 turnovers. The Lady Cavs were able to convert those miscues into 31 points. SGU shot 45 percent from the field after shooting only 33 percent in its first four games. “The girls did a great job of executing both the offensive and defensive game plans,” said SGU coach Herman Burge. “It feels good to see some shots finally go down. We work hard on shooting every practice.” Junior guard Porsche Young led all scorers with 17 points and five assists. Senior guard Leticia Silva had 16 points, including a 3-for-5 night from 3-point range. Seven lady Cavaliers connected from long distance for the game. SGU led 50-29 at halftime after shooting 56 percent from the field and 9-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Lady Cavs scored 19 points off 13 Northwood turnovers in the first 20 minutes. SGU hit six of its first eight shots in racing out to an early 19-3 lead. The advantage swelled to 19 with 11 minutes left in the half on Kylee Tatum’s second three-pointer of the game. The Lady Knights cut it to 12 with just more than two minutes remaining in the half, but SGU answered with a 12-1 run, capped off by a Stacy Lee steal and layup. The defense took over in the second half, as the Lady Cavs held the Lady Knights to no field goals in 25 attempts. SGU outscored the visitors 33-7 in the final 20 minutes. SGU (2-3) returns to action this weekend at the Our Lady of the Lakes Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Lady Cavs take on the host team at 8 p.m. Friday and St. Thomas-Houston at 2 p.m. Saturday.
