Oklahoma Baptist plays its NAIA Opening Round men’s soccer match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Olathe, Kan., against No. 15 MidAmerica Nazarene. The Bison lost at MNU, 6-2, last season. “Redemption. That was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the draw,” said Bison coach Brent Coates. “They are a very good team, but I like our chances. We’re excited.” The Pioneers are 12-1-7 on the season. The lone loss was a 1-0 setback at Baker and MNU tied William Carey, No. 7 Mobile, No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan, McPherson, Graceland and No. 9 Benedictine twice. MNU also has notable wins against No. 8 Kansas Wesleyan and No. 12 Missouri Valley. The Bison were 0-1 against the NAIA Top 25 this season with a loss at USAO. The only common opponent is John Brown, whom MNU beat 1-0 and the Bison defeated 2-0 in the regular season before tying in the SAC championship game. Trent Rimmich leads the Pioneers with 11 goals this season, while goalkeeper Chris Erickson is fifth in the NAIA at 0.71 goals against per game. He has 64 saves and six shutouts. Tito Silva leads the Bison scoring attack this year with 10 goals, while Marcus Oliveira has 83 saves in goal this season. Saturday’s winner advances to the final site and the round of 16 and will play Nov. 27 against Kansas Wesleyan or Olivet Nazarene. At 8-8-1, the Bison have the second-worst record in the field of 32, but haven’t lost in the postseason. OBU reached the NAIA Tournament by winning the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament — playing three road games to advance. MNU advanced as the fourth of eight at-large entrants. Fans not making the trip can view Saturday’s game through NeuLion for $9.95 per day or $29.95 for the entire tournament package. Visit NAIA.org for more information.
