Oral Roberts University guard Warren Niles scored a game-high 29 points in leading his team to a 90-41 win over St. Gregory's Wednesday night at the Mabee Center.
Niles, a senior from Cincinnati, was 11-for-12 from the field and tied a career-high with seven 3-pointers as the Golden Eagles won for the 24th consecutive time in the regular season at home.
ORU (1-1) shot well from the field for most of the night, finishing at 56 percent for the game. The home team made 11 of 20 shots from beyond the arc and forced 22 Cavalier turnovers.
Senior guard Fayzon Richey led the Cavs with 21 points.
The game was an exhibition for SGU and will not count toward its regular season record.
The Cavs trailed 9-1 early but hit six of their next seven shots and took a 17-15 lead with 11:41 remaining in the first half. Richey was 4-for-4 from the field and scored 10 points during that stretch.
That lead, however, was short-lived for the visitors. ORU battled back to take a 26-21 advantage three minutes later and then closed the half on a 22-3 run. The Golden Eagles made eight of their last 13 shots from the field compared to only 1-for-9 for the Cavs.
ORU shot 60 percent overall during the first 20 minutes, including 7-of-11 from three-point range. Niles led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting at the break.
The second half opened with much of the same as ORU made six of its first seven shots and extended its lead to 61-26 with 15:41 remaining. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 51 points in the second half.
SGU shot only 29 percent from the field for the game. Brock Vorwald finished with six points and one rebound for the Cavs.
SGU (1-1) returns to action Saturday at home against Northwood (Texas) University. That game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip.
