  • The homicide investigation into last month's shooting death near Wellston is continuing in Lincoln County.
Authorities in Lincoln County, along with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, continue to probe the case after the body of 35-year-old Gustavo Barragan Valencia was found in a rural area on Oct. 24.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner this week released Valencia's official cause of death as "gunshot wounds to the head," with the manner of death listed as homicide, Office Spokeswoman Amy Elliott said.
Jessica Brown, OSBI spokeswoman, confirmed Wednesday that several agents are still involved in the probe, although she said the OSBI had no new information to release in the case.
Valencia, who was reported as being an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was found dead in a wooded area along on Pottawatomie Road near 960 Road, which is also N.E. 150th Street.
Information from the initial investigation indicated Valencia was a landscaper and had been living in Oklahoma since June.
At the onset of the probe, Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty said the murder appeared to involve an "execution-style" killing, with the sheriff believing that drug and gang activity was likely involved. The probe quickly intensified and developed as authorities interviewed numerous people as part of the case, and that investigation continues.
The homicide also was believed to be part of a crime spree that included a home invasion in Lincoln County.
    Watch for updates.
