Oklahoma Baptist opens pool play at the NAIA Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 3:15 p.m. against 15th-ranked Madonna University.
The 10th-ranked Lady Bison are assigned to Pool C, which also includes third-ranked Columbia College from Missouori and Carroll College from Montana.
Teams play one match a day Tuesday through Thursday and OBU plays at 3:15 p.m. each day, playing Carroll on Wednesday and Columbia Thursday.
Madonna University is in Livonia, Mich., and comes into the tournament with a 34-7 record. One of those losses came at the hands of the Lady Bison, who topped the Crusaders, 3-2, in the Embry-Riddle Tournament. OBU also claimed a 3-1 win in 2010.
Madonna has four hitters with more than 300 kills each, but prefers to go to Samantha Geile who has 200 more attacks than any of her teammates this season. Evia Prieditis is fourth in the NAIA with 1574 assists this season.
OBU and Carroll College have never met on the volleyball court. The Saints come in with a record of 25-9 and lead the NAIA with 20.1 digs per set. Elli Graff is second in the NAIA with 185 blocks this year.
Columbia enters as the pool favorite with a 37-1 record and the lone loss was to No. 2 Texas-Brownsville. The Cougars do many things well and are atop the NAIA statistics in team hitting percentage (.353), assists per game (14.2) and kills per game (15.4). They also are second nationally in aces per set at 2.33.
Setter Paula Fereirra is primarily responsible for those gaudy numbers and ranks second in assists nationally at 12.2 per game and she also had 67 aces on the year.
OBU has a 2-0 all-time record against the Cougars, winning 3-1 last season and 2-0 back in 1979.
The Lady Bison are 32-4 and already have the school single-season wins record. Kristin Pressley is fifth in the NAIA at 4.43 kills per set and Sabra Clark is among the NAIA leaders with 10.09 assists per set.
The top two teams from each pool advance to the single-elimination bracket with the winners of each pool getting a first-round bye. The first round and quarterfinals are played Friday with the semfinals and championship set for Saturday.
