Following the much-anticipated Black Friday shopping rush, local retailers reported everything went well to kickoff the Christmas shopping season.
Shawnee Mall Manager Scott Kingrey said Black Friday sales went very well.
    “We’re very busy,” Kingrey said.
Several mall merchants opened earlier, and reported to Kingrey that they saw a good number of customers.
“They were all very pleased with the results,” he said. “They ones who did [open early] were glad they did.”
Typically, Black Friday sales are limited to consumer electronics, however many clothing stores opened early and saw good results as well.
“I’ve gotten very positive feedback,” Kingrey said.
“You spend the whole year getting ready for this,” he said. “It’s nice to see it come together.”
Kmart was extremely busy on Friday, although their shopping craze began on Thanksgiving Day.
Kmart Manager Derek Stevens said they’ve had steady traffic and have seen “substantially more” customers than last year.
Kmart was open on Thanksgiving, but closed from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, then reopened until 3:30 a.m. The store closed again and reopened at 5 a.m. with Black Friday deals.
“We’ve had an incredible amount of traffic,” Stevens said, attributing that to the new approach and hours.
Many area merchants are expecting to be busy throughout the weekend as the holiday shopping season gets into full swing.
