A Pottawatomie County girl who was accidentally shot by her brother as the two played with a loaded pistol earlier this week continues to recover at an Oklahoma City hospital.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth said the siblings were playing with the small-caliber handgun went it accidentally went off Wednesday night, with the bullet striking the 12-year-old girl in the abdomen.

Booth, who released the girl’s name Friday as Stephanie Lawson, said she remained hospitalized for treatment. An OU Medical Center spokesman reported she was in good condition late Friday afternoon.

Booth said the shooting was an accident. The incident occurred at the family’s home, located in an area not far from Fishmarket Road and Homer Lane. Booth said the shooting occurred while the children were home alone and the mother and stepfather were reportedly driving home from work.

Booth said the girl’s brother applied pressure to wound and called 911. Deputy Travis Sullivan was first to arrive on the scene, Booth said, and began first-aid. A Medi Flight helicopter ambulance was called to transport the girl to Oklahoma City for treatment.

In addition to the small-caliber pistol involved in the accident, Booth said deputies also removed a few other weapons from the home for safekeeping.

While Booth called the shooting an accident, he said the district attorney would likely review the case.
