  • The lights on I-40 between Kickapoo and Harrison are back on.

The city of Shawnee had a contractor out Thursday to look at the streetlights. The contractor determined the lights were out due to an issue with a fuse.

It was an easy fix, City Manager Brian McDougal said.

After some debate, it was found that there is an agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to maintain the lights on the Shawnee stretch of I-40, McDougal said.

Originally city officials believed OG&E would be responsible for maintaining the lights, or ODOT, since they had installed the lights originally.

OG&E Spokesman Brian Alford could not confirm if OG&E was indeed responsible for the repairs or not.

“We’re going to work to address this just as quickly as we can,” Alford said.

He added that regardless of who was financially responsible for the repairs, OG&E would work with them to ensure timely repair of the lights.

ODOT Spokesman Larry Clore said ODOT was not responsible for repairs to the lights under Oklahoma statute.

“We’re working with the city so the city can get the lights fixed,” Clore said.

Messages left for City Engineer John Krywicki were not returned.
