  • Class 3A’s top two squads, No. 1 Kingfisher and No. 2 Seminole, will battle it out in a state semifinal Saturday night at Putnam City High School for a berth in the 3A state title game.

Neither team has fallen yet this season, with the Yellowjackets standing at a perfect 13-0 and the Chieftains at 12-0.

Seminole earned blowout victories over Marlow and Plainview and eked out a 34-28 win over No. 4 Metro Christian last Friday to earn its spot in a state semifinal.

Kingfisher, the District 3A-3 champion, trounced Lone Grove, Tuttle and Stigler in successive weeks to advance to the semis.

Kingfisher is led by its backfield tandem of quarterback Grant Newton and tailback Landon Nault. Newton has passed for 1,330 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 862 yards and 19 scores on the season. Nault is averaging almost 137 yards per game on the ground, and has churned his way to 27 TDs.

The Yellowjackets have obliterated opponents on both sides of the ball this season, piling up 44.6 points per game while allowing just 5.5.

The Chieftains are no slouches either, amassing just under 50 points a game while relying on a powerful rushing attack that features senior Trenton Newson and junior Papi White.

The game will result in the first loss of the season for one of these two teams, while the winner will advance to play in the Class 3A championship game at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater against either Blanchard or Jones. Those two teams will square off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Putnam City High School.

Kingfisher and Seminole will kick off the late game at 7:30.
