Micaela Yu and McKenzie Cooper each recorded a double-double Thursday as Class 5A’s third-ranked Shawnee Lady Wolves held off a late rally and topped Tulsa Edison 60-47 in the first round of the Bixby Tournament.
Yu led all scorers with 23 points, and Cooper added 20 as the Lady Wolves moved to 3-0. Each pulled in 10 rebounds, and Kelsey Simmons led Shawnee in assists with five.
The Lady Wolves were 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the free throw line.
“I was really proud,” Shawnee coach Wendi Wells said. “Edison came out very athletic and we were still able to keep our composure and play under control. I was proud of our younger kids for sticking to the game plan.”
Wells credited Shaiann Tramble with playing a quality game at point guard.
“She brought the ball to the floor and played an overall great game,” Wells said.
Tramble scored nine points for the victors.
Shawnee led 15-6 after the first quarter, and 31-13 at halftime. Edison picked up steam down the stretch, out-scoring Shawnee 34-29.
The Bixby Tournament continues today, and will conclude Saturday. Shawnee will have its home opener Dec. 11 against Deer Creek.
