Turnovers and trouble at the free throw line weighed heavy on Class 5A’s third-ranked Shawnee as the Lady Wolves suffered their first loss in 34 games with a 36-25 setback to the hosts in Saturday’s title game of the Bixby Tournament.
The score was tied at 6 after the first quarter, but Bixby was able to pull away for a 19-10 halftime advantage. Shawnee cut the lead to 26-18 in the third.
The Lady Wolves suffered from 13 turnovers, and were just 2-for-10 (20 percent) from the free throw line.
“Our youth showed tonight,” said Shawnee head coach Wendi Wells. “We didn’t take good care of the ball. We made a few mistakes and they were costly.
“You can’t miss that many free throws against a quality team.”
Bixby is the fifth-ranked team in Class 6A.
Bailey Taylor led the Lady Wolves with 11 points. Senior Micaela Yu added five, and she and Taylor led the team in rebounds with five apiece.
The Lady Wolves were 10-for-29 from the field, and 1-for-7 from 3-point range.
Shawnee, now 4-1 on the season, will host Deer Creek at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for the home opener.
