About 38 children from 15 families enjoyed the spirit of Christmas Friday night at the Shawnee Masonic Lodge.
The evening began with a festive holiday meal, and as the crowd began singing, “Here Comes Santa Clause,” Jolly Old St. Nick showed up with a bag of candy canes in tow.
As he spread holiday cheer, he gathered the children around him and read, “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
Each family got a moment to spend time with Santa for pictures and fun, then presents. Most received bicycles and other toys.
Brothers Travis and Tanner Cody, ages 10 and 7, were excited about their new bikes.
    “They’re cool,” Tanner said.
Their dad, Kenneth Cody, complimented the Masons for the event.
“This is nice what they’re doing,” he said.
Bob Peters, secretary of the Masonic Lodge, said this was the lodge’s first-ever project for such a Christmas party.
“We purchased 30 bicycles, three scooters and tricycles,” Peters said. “We hope next year to do the same.”
Cecil Johnson, chaplain of the lodge, was excited to see the children having such a good time.
“The kids seem to be enjoying it,” Johnston said.
The lodge’s Worshipful Master Bobby D. Jones, said they hope to hold more Christmas events like this one in the future.
“It’s all for the kids,” he said.
