  • Behind Bailey Taylor’s game-high 24 points, Class 5A’s top-ranked Shawnee Lady Wolves continued their string of good fortunes Friday night with a 66-50 dashing of Suburban Conference rival Guthrie.

Taylor dropped in three second-half field goals from long range, and netted five points in a 9-0 run midway through the fourth.

“Bailey had a good game,” said Shawnee coach Wendi Wells. “She took over.”

The Lady Wolves finish out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with an 8-1 record, and they are now 3-0 against conference opposition.

Shawnee led 16-11 after one quarter, and 30-21 at the break. The Lady Wolves were on top 47-37 after three quarters.

“I think that we’re a really good team, but sometimes we just don’t play very smart,” Wells said. “And we talked about it after the game.”

Wells said despite being a predominantly young team, the girls continue to catch on and improve day by day.

“It’s great to see them understanding,” she said. “They’re maturing. I asked them what we struggled with, and they started naming stuff off.

“And now we’ve got to take that next step and fix that during the game instead of after the game.”

McKenzie Cooper supplied 16 points for Shawnee Friday, and Micaela Yu dropped in a baker’s dozen. Shaiann Tramble connected on one 3-point field goal and came away with seven points.

Micayla Haynes led the Lady Bluejays with 19 points, and teammates Melinda Murillo and Kamber Smedley provided 14 and 10, respectively.

The Lady Wolves were 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lady Bluejays were 14-for-23 (60.9 percent).

Shawnee will resume its schedule Jan. 8 with a trip to Suburban Conference member El Reno.
