Despite a double-double from Evan Anderson, the Dale Pirates squandered a strong first half for the second straight game, falling 59-45 to Weleetka in the consolation semifinals of the Tournament of Champions at Oral Roberts University Friday.
The Pirates built a 27-22 halftime advantage over the Outlaws, but Weleetka stormed back in the second half.
Only five Outlaws found their way into the scoring column, but each netted at least nine points. Montana Gormley led the way with 16.
“They are a really balanced team,” Dale head coach Jeff Edmonson said of Weleetka. “They played very well and shot the ball well in the second half.”
The Pirates, who held an early third-quarter lead, were in a similar situation in their first-round game against Booker T. Washington Thursday. The Hornets outpaced the Pirates in the second half to win that game 80-57, setting up Dale’s matchup with Weleetka.
Anderson led all scorers with 22 and collected 13 boards for Dale (8-3), which will face Arnett at 10:30 a.m. today for seventh place honors.
Jace Wilkins and Caleb Banks each chipped in eight for the Pirates. Banks also notched two 3-point buckets.
