  • Cavs nipped in final seconds

  • Travis Payton dropped in a field goal with six seconds remaining Thursday, and Wayland Baptist went away with a 72-70 win over host St. Gregory’s in the Cavaliers’ Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
     
    SGU’s Fayzon Richey connected on a foul shot with 19 ticks left to tie the game at 70.
     
    Payton was one of several players to reach double figures on the night as he went 6-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the stripe for 15 points. Richey finished with 14 for the Cavs, going 5-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-4 on charities.
     
    Tim Stromberg also netted 14 for the Cavaliers, who fall to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.
     
    SGU’s Devonte Young and WBU’s Eric Milam each collected 13 points, while the Pioneers’ Juhreece Thompson came off the bench to supply a game-high 16 points.
    Reggie Fondren netted 14 for WBU.
     
    The Cavaliers finished at 23-for-54 (42.6 percent) from the field, including 3-for-14 from 3-point range. Young garnered two of the long shots.
     
    SGU was 21-for-28 at the free throw line, and WBU was 7-for-11. The Pioneers were 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field, including 5-for-18 on treys.
     
    The Pioneers led 36-32 at the half.
     
    WBU moves to 10-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
     
    St. Gregory’s will host Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday.
