  • Shawnee High School’s Wolves and Lady Wolves are among a handful of area teams that will open tournament play at various sites Thursday.

Class 5A’s top-ranked Lady Wolves, now owners of a five-game win streak following Tuesday’s 60-29 smashing of Suburban Conference nemesis and 18th-ranked El Reno, will face Class 6A Ponca City at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the East Central Oklahoma Classic at Ada High School.

The Shawnee girls are 9-1 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in the Suburban Conference.

Shawnee’s boys have a win streak of their own after registering their second consecutive win over a ranked team. The Wolves topped SC foe and then No. 14 Guthrie (65-61) prior to the Christmas break, and they resumed play Tuesday with a 49-40 win over No. 10 El Reno. This puts head coach Ron Arthur’s bunch at 3-7 overall and 2-2 against conference members.

The Wolves will meet Class 6A Choctaw at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the East Central Oklahoma Classic.

In other tournament action Thursday, Tecumseh will take part in the first round of the SNU/Bethany Classic. Class 4A’s sixth-ranked and undefeated Savages, coming off a 76-62 win over Ada Tuesday, will tangle with Oklahoma City Casady at 2:30 p.m.

Tecumseh’s boys are now 3-0 this season against Ada’s Cougars.

The Lady Savages went to 0-3 against Ada this year with Tuesday’s 40-26 setback. They will meet Class 5A’s No. 3 Deer Creek at 1 p.m. in Thursday's first round.

Bethel will be the site of the CD Warehouse Classic. The Bethel boys will take on Little Axe at 3 p.m. Thursday, and Class 4A’s 18th-ranked Bethel Lady Wildcats will square off with Seminole at 4:20 p.m.

    Seminole’s boys will tangle with Perkins-Tryon at 8:20 p.m.

Dale will participate in the Konawa Tournament as Class 2A’s No. 2 Lady Pirates tip off at 4:20 p.m. Thursday versus Strother. The Pirates, ranked sixth, will take on Holdenville at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Prague will continue play in the Beggs Tournament, and Earlsboro will host the Pottawatomie Telephone Company Jim Walling Classic beginning Thursday. Asher and Maud will also participate in that event.

Chandler will be in the first round of the Ripley Tournament Thursday.

Tournament play for area teams will continue Friday and Saturday.

Other area teams, including Meeker and McLoud, are idle until next week. Meeker will host Stroud Tuesday, Jan. 15, while McLoud visits Prague.
