Shawnee officials are continuing to work toward creating bike routes within city limits.
There are ongoing discussions within the Shawnee Traffic Commission, Assistant City Engineer Michael Ludi said.
The traffic commission is an advisory body, which presents recommendations to the Shawnee City Commission for approval.
“They’re just trying to put some recommendations together for the city commission,” Ludi said.
The effort comes after a letter was sent from the Shawnee Planning Commission to the traffic commission with a request to implement bike lanes along Bryan Street.
Shawna Turner, chairwoman of the planning commission, initially had the idea for bike lanes along Bryan Street.
Many people jog and bicycle down this street, she said.
It can be very dangerous for bicyclists and joggers anywhere in the city, so bike routes are very important, Turner added.
Instead of focusing on one street, the traffic commission is working to create a bike route map, Ludi said.
“We’re looking at it from a broader perspective than just one street,” he said.
This map is likely to include side streets as well as main streets for cyclists to use. It is expected to connect throughout the city.
“I think you have to look at the city as a whole,” Ludi said.
No action is expected to be taken this month at the traffic commission meeting, but Ludi expects recommendations to go to the city commission in the next few months, he said.
Turner said she is very pleased with the progress so far.
“What they have offered is much more comprehensive,” she said. “This is the best position this community has ever been in to make this happen.”
