Oklahoma Baptist flexed some defensive muscle and won its second straight Sooner Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest with a 56-46 win at home against John Brown Thursday.
OBU held the Golden Eagles to 25 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers to improve to 2-3 in the SAC and 9-7 overall.
Zbeyda Aremi had a game-high 15 points with Charity Fowler adding 11. Aremi blocked two shots and dealt three assists to lead OBU in both categories while Fowler had a team-high eight rebounds and Lilia Inoubli contributed three steals, coming off the bench.
“We played great defense,” said OBU coach Casi Bays. “Janell Beacham defended on the threes really well.”
The Lady Bison fell behind early but used an 11-1 run to build a 16-11 lead with 7:19 left in the first half. Fowler had four points in that string.
An 8-3 half-ending run gave OBU a 31-23 lead at the break.
OBU led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but John Brown trimmed it to 46-44 with 3:06 to play. Aremi and Beacham made two free throws each for a 50-44 edge with 64 seconds left.
The Golden Eagles got it down to four but OBU put the game away when with 29 seconds left, Fowler made one free throw and missed the second only to have Aremi get the rebound and go back up for the basket and a 53-46 lead.
OBU now turns its attention to SAC-leading Oklahoma City at 3 p.m. Saturday at OCU Saturday.
