  • City commissioners are expected to take action on a pool contract at their next meeting.

“I feel pretty confident that we’ll have a contract before the commission in February,” James Bryce, director of operations, said.

Bryce has been working with City Attorney Mary Ann Karns to complete a contract with Larkin Aquatics, a design company selected by the Pool Committee, to create a design for the new pool.

He added that the pool will not be opened in 2013, likely due to construction. Bryce said he is currently working on other options so residents will have a place to swim in the summer.

John Ayers, chairman of the Pool Committee, said is ready to get the contract signed.

“We’re excited,” he said. “Once we get the contract signed, we’ll start having meetings again.”

The committee will work with Larkin Aquatics to create the design and rendering of the pool, Ayers said.

“The pool has to be designed so it’s enjoyable to everybody,” he said.

Given Shawnee’s various demographics, including youth and senior citizens, the pool must be accessible to the different people who will use it, Ayers added.

He said the pool house will likely remain, but the inside will probably be renovated.

Currently Ayers said he is researching other area pools to find the best one for Shawnee.

“We’re waiting for the contract to be signed, and then we’re going to rock and roll,” he said.
