OWASSO, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma couple has donated more than $30,000 so the Owasso Police Department can buy 30 new rifles.
The gift is from Barbara and Lynn Owens, who own Frontier International Trucks. The money will be used to buy Colt M4 carbines — also known as AR-15s.
The Tulsa World reports (http://is.gd/AE1mCv ) the rifles will be assigned to patrol officers, school resource officers and SWAT team members.
Lynn Owens says he and his wife began discussing the donation in October — before the Newtown school shooting. Lynn Owens says he hopes the weapons won't have to be used but that the intent is to keep officers safe.
Interim Police Chief Scott Chambless says the rifle will give officers a "precision capability" that they don't currently have with handguns and shotguns.
