An investigation is ongoing into a strong-armed robbery case after a Shawnee Mall worker was mugged of her purse and two moneybags in the parking lot.
The woman works for two of the businesses inside the mall and was arriving for work when the incident occurred. Carol, who is 75, said she parked her vehicle on the north side of the mall for entry into the food court entrance.
She noticed a black SUV sitting in the area when she parked. When she got out of her vehicle, carrying her purse and two moneybags under her arm, she said a man walked by and said, “Good morning.”
She returned the sentiment but it turned out to be anything but a good morning.
“The first thing I knew he was behind me with his hand over my mouth,” Carol said. The suspect grabbed her purse and “slammed me down,” she said.
Carol said the man walked back to his SUV and drove away toward Walmart.
“I sat there and screamed but no one heard me,” she said. With a bump on her head and shocked from what had just happened, she managed to make her way inside and asked for the security guard. Shawnee police were called to the scene.
A report on the incident shows a REACT ambulance responded to the scene to check the woman, who suffered a bump to her head from hitting the concrete, a report shows. She was taken to the ER by a family member but said she’s still having headaches from the ordeal.
The suspect was described as being a black male wearing a stocking cap with black and white around the edge.
Carol, who has worked at the mall in some form over the past 20 years, said she’s never heard of anything like this happening there before and she is concerned.
Carol said the suspect got away with her wallet and other personal items in her purse, but she was able to cancel accounts before any damage could be done.
As far as the moneybags, she said they contained very little — just a small amount of change to be used for the day.
Shawnee police detectives are investigating this case. Anyone with information about the possible suspect or SUV can contact Crimestoppers, 273-0989.
