  • It’s only January, but this weekend’s Arvest Bank/Sehorn Yamaha Shawnee Invitational at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletics Center has a state tournament lineup.

Eleven of the 16 teams taking part in the tournament are ranked, led by Shawnee’s own Class 5A No. 1 Lady Wolves.

Shawnee (13-1) will kick off the tournament action this morning against Southeast at 9:30.

The Shawnee boys (5-9), unranked in Class 5A, will take on 5A’s seventh-ranked Southeast at 11 a.m.

Both Shawnee teams have gotten plenty of rest ahead of hosting this tournament, as they have been off since splitting games with Bishop McGuinness Jan. 15.

In the girls’ bracket, 5A’s No. 15 Ardmore and No. 20 McAlester will square off today at 12:30 p.m. in one of two opening-round matchups between ranked opponents. In the other high-profile game, Class 6A’s No. 19 Stillwater will take on Class 5A’s No. 19 El Reno in a 6:30 p.m. contest.

Tulsa Edison, ranked fifth in Class 5A, will challenge Northwest Classen in the 3:30 p.m. slot.

In the boys’ bracket, 5A’s No. 3 Coweta will face unranked Sapulpa today at 2 p.m. and 6A’s seventh-ranked Stillwater meets unranked Choctaw at 5 p.m.

In the 8 p.m. nightcap, Class 6A’s No. 18 Norman North and Class 5A’s No. 11 El Reno will battle in the only matchup of ranked teams in the boys opening round.
